Review: B5 Rear Diff Mounts

I recently (yesterday) installed an Apikol rear differential mount on my 1998 A4 1.8t Quattro. While i was in there, I also installed the Stern bushings on the rear crossmember bracket that supports the aft end of the differential.

The first thing i noticed was a firmer, stiffer drivetrain that had a less wobbly feeling under load and during load transitions. A nice change indeed. Anyone upgrading to stiffer engine/transmission/drivetrain mounts should expect that the amount of noise and vibration transmitted into the cabin is increased. it gives the car a more raw feel and definitely reduces the cushy, luxurious, quiet ride to which I had become accustomed. Most notably, there seems to be a sweet spot around 60-70mph where the driveline noise resonates. While it is not unbearable, it is definitely there. Additionally, there is a slight whine when in overrun (in gear, off throttle) as the drivetrain is working to slow the car. I spoke with a customer today who has the same mounts in his car, and he experienced the same thing.

One thing I did not expect was a slight clunk when shifting gears. A drivetrain stabilizer, which is on the list of upcoming mods, should alleviate this.

All in all, the mounts give the car’s drivetrain a much stiffer feeling and it is a very nice upgrade for anyone looking for a more direct feel. As i mentioned, there is additional noise and vibration and, as with any mod, there is a tradeoff between the comfort associated with a softer mount and the performance associated with a stiffer mount. For any enthusiast that is focused on performance, I highly recommend this upgrade. However, if you typically use your car for grocery store runs or toting around the kids, it may not be the best option for you.

Both of these mount upgrades are available through us, so feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you would like to place an order.
